B.C. arthritis, diabetes patients have 6 months to switch to cheaper ‘biosimilar’ drugs
I'll be arriving in Vancouver on the 6th of August and I'd like to buy a cheap old used car to explore BC with for 3 months. I'll be working in Whistler for the winter season from the 1st of November and will have no need for the car from then on. I know that I can pick up a cheap car off Craigslist or something similar so let's not worry about that in this topic.
I want to find out how to arrange the car insurance. If it simplifies things, let's assume that I won't be leaving BC in this time. I'm 26 and I've had a full, clean UK driver license since I have never had my own insurance policy as I have not had to own a car for a long time. Back when I did, I was only a named driver under my parent's policy.
I will not have a permanent address in BC as I will be couch surfing and camping. I suspect that many of you may suggest that I just hire. If that's the case, could you suggest some companies that I can get a good deal from?
Probationary periods in BC – Are you better off without them?
You may be able to drive in BC without a BC driver's license, but without a permanent address in BC and I think , a BC driver's license, getting insurance will be pretty much impossible. You need to prove that you are a BC resident and have a place where mail i. Insurance almost always requires registration paperwork and an in province license. And without any driving record in Canada or the US , you are going to be facing sky-high rates, no matter your age or the car.
A clean UK record means nothing here and companies aren't going to give any credit for previous history other than with US insurance companies.
How do I apply?
Plus I doubt any company with have 3 month terms. Otherwise, I'd just start contact the big companies and compare what they offer - Enterprise, Hertz, National, Budget etc.
For just 3 months, I'd suggest going the rental route as it is definitely easier, faster, more reliable, and potentially even cheaper. I mainly use Avis, but it doesn't matter which company you use since they're all pretty similar. Start with a comparison website like kayak. I'll check out rentals. Sounds like Canada isn't the country for this type of classic 'buy a banger and run it into the ground' travelling adventure.
I'll save that one for a future trip. This topic has been automatically locked due to inactivity. Email community lonelyplanet. This topic has been locked by a moderator. All rights reserved. No part of this site may be reproduced without our written permission. No worries. I'll be working….
